What You “Need to Know” About A Mission Possible Life
I’m excited to officially announce my new book, Mission Possible: Go Create A Life That Counts, is out and available! I get asked all the time, “Timmy, why did you write this book?” and my response is simple: to encourage. To encourage people of all ages that it is possible to create a life that counts. Every single one of us truly has the chance to make the world a better place. And I’m not talking about clishe slogans or hashtags. I truly believe every person can have a life of meaning, significance, and purpose. So, as my new book is released – to eliminate any potential confusion – I want to encourage you with four “need to knows” about Mission Possible:
1.) You Need To Know: You Have A Mission
Don’t over complicate it.
You have a mission. Period. Too many times we think ‘mission’ and ‘purpose’ is some mysterious thing. It doesn’t have to be.
A mission possible life starts by believing and accepting that you truly have a mission. The dictionary defines mission as ‘a task or job that someone is given to do.’ I believe that the God of the universe has given each of us a task or job to do. You’re not here by accident or by happenstance. You’re not meant to spend your life meandering around or going through the motions. No, you’re meant to live on purpose and for purpose. Another way to say this is that you’re meant to live out the “good works” God prepared in advance for you to do (Eph. 2:10).
Take inventory of your life. What unique abilities, experiences, and passions do you have? How does your personality fit into the equation? What gets you excited to get out of bed in the morning? After you’ve taken this simple ‘personal assessment,’ ask yourself: How can I use who I am and what God’s given me to make other people’s lives better every day?
This idea of mission is not meant to be scary or cheesy. It’s supposed to keep us focused and fulfilled.
In September 2020, a study found that 57% of Americans wonder how they can find meaning and purpose every month.
Well, you don’t have to “wonder” anymore. What has God opened your eyes to or pricked your heart for? However you answer that, that could be your mission. Step into it. Start small. And do something!
Living a mission possible life means executing the good works that God has already prepared for you to do.
2.) You Need To Know: It Matters
Your life matters. How you spend your time matters. The way you love people matters. Your character matters. The mission matters!
I believe one of the greatest lies the devil continues to tell is that our lives don’t matter: You’ll never be good enough. You have too much baggage. What about that skeleton in your closet? Have you ever heard those things whispered in your ear at night when all your friends have gone home, or the kids are in bed and the screens are powered down?
It’s hard to live mission possible when we don’t fully believe that we are made in God’s image, hand-chosen by Him and fully equipped to carry out works of eternal significance. Lean in a bit. Please hear me. If you have made the decision to trust in Jesus, you’re not just an average person who got slightly better. You were someone who was dead in sin who is now alive in Christ!
I hope that fires you up as much as it does me. When I reflect on this drastic trade, it makes me feel so alive and empowered that I can’t help but feel driven to influence others. I want the same for you.
When you believe that you are valuable and worthy because of who created you, everything changes. You find meaning. You live with purpose. Significance exists within each day. And when you soak in the truth that you were created in the image of God, by love, in love, and for love, you begin to see the world differently. You see yourself and people in a new light. Your eyes open to hurt, and your heart bleeds for the hurting. Your priorities shift and you begin to understand that it doesn’t matter how successful you are—that significance matters more!
It doesn’t matter if you are 15 or 85, if you have breath you have purpose. And your purpose matters so so much. It matters to God, but it also matters to whoever you're called to impact, to whoever you're called to help, to whoever you're called to influence, to love, to care for, to give to! Your mission is not just about you. Your mission is about other people. And other people need us to answer the call when situations seem hopeless, when desperation sinks in, when life feels like it’s too much to bear. As the classic saying goes, we are the “hands and feet” of Jesus. That is why it matters.
When we live mission possible lives, we create a cycle of good, service, of compassion, and of action that inspires others to continue.
3.) You Need To Know: You’re Capable
Notice I didn’t title my book “Mission Impossible.” It’s “Mission Possible.” Not Mission Probable. Not Mission Maybe. Not Mission Unlikely. But Mission Possible.
It’s Possible because I believe every person is able to make their life count. It’s Possible because we can achieve a life of significance. It’s Possible because Jesus accomplished his mission on the cross, therefore, our mission is now made possible through him.
Several years ago, a young girl was born with severe special needs in Ghana. She had a loving mother, but when this young girl was 4 years old, her mom died, leaving her alone for nearly a month.
When someone finally found her, she was so malnourished that she only weighed 27 pounds. She was taken to an orphanage and while there, a family in the U.S. learned about her situation. She needed surgery for spina bifida and bilateral clubfoot. The medical care for this little girl was complex and costly. The pull on the family’s heart was evident, but they didn’t have the money
However, when the family read her name – Christabel, which means “beautiful Christian” – they thought, “Christabel…Christ is able.”
So, they said, "Yeah, Christ is able. We are going to adopt her. We want her, even though we don't know how to take care of her, we don't have the money for all of her surgeries, but we believe Christ is able."
You see, the family was overwhelmed, but they were reminded that Christ is able. He is the one who makes our mission possible. Let this story serve as encouragement to you. You may not always feel equipped for your mission, but when God calls you to something, he’ll make it possible for you to accomplish it.
You are capable. But don’t get it twisted. You alone can only go so far. However, when we make the decision to trust Him with our lives, we are automatically seated at the table of what seems humanly impossible.
When you live mission possible, you live a life that counts because of what God has done and is doing through you.
4.) You Need To Know: It’s Worth It
The mission God has for you is worth it. It’s worth the work. It’s worth the pain. It’s worth the sacrifice. It’s worth your time. It’s worth your life. Why? Because it effects eternity – not only for you but for other people as well!
When you make the choice to say “yes” to your mission, you will change a life. One or many. It doesn’t matter—that’s up to God. The choices we make today will have an impact tomorrow. Whether it’s how we spend our time, care for our bodies, or treat other people, choices that seem so small can have great significance.
I am writing this so that you live today with eternity in mind and so that your end goal is not shaped by what the world wants but rather is anchored in what God wants. I don’t want your end goal to be about praise, promotion, and applause; I want it to be about people, purpose, and passion.
Yes, we have to make tough choices every day. We have to grind out the work. We have to shift and continually reevaluate our priorities. We have to fight sometimes without knowing the battle plan. Some days and moments are just plain hard. We’re going to mess up and disappointment is probably inevitable. But when the mission is given and directed by God, take a breath, keep moving, He's got you…it’ll be worth it in the end.
What matters more than the fun we have or the stuff we accumulate is what we did with the time we were given.
Find your Mission, pursue your purpose, and go create a life that counts!
