Why Be Normal?
Many spend their lives wondering if they’re normal or wanting to be, hoping to fit in. To be part of the crowd. Maybe you’ve experienced this at some point in your life. To feel a sense of belonging, you wore the same brand, had the same haircut, or talked the same way as everyone else. It’s funny how hard we try sometimes to be something we’re not.
The essence of normal is the status quo, being just like those around us – in how we look, what we wear, what we like, what we buy, what we watch, etc. Being ‘normal’ is safe. And easy. But it always leads to mediocrity.
When we strive to be just like everyone else, we never have a chance to be special. I have never woken up once in my life saying, “I wanted to be normal. I want to be average today.” No. I’ve never wanted to be average or like anyone else. What’s the point in that?! I’ve always wanted to be different. Why? Because God considers me, and you, His masterpiece!
"For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago."
Ephesians 2:10
This mindset can be attributed to my parents’ constant encouragement. For as long as I remember, they repeatedly told me and my siblings,
“God has a special plan for you.”
“You are not like everyone else.”
“You are unique.”
Having this ingrained in my head helped lay a solid foundation of identity in my life. And it’s so true! Out of over 7.5 billion people living on this earth, there is no one else like me! There’s no one else like you! We are each different in how we look (besides perhaps identical twins haha), how we think, how we create, how we process information. We also have different life experiences – both good and bad. Even though one or a few of these things may be similar to someone else, the combination of all of them that make you who you are, are unique to just you! That make sense?
And I want you to know this. My parents were very intentional in raising me, but not all parents are encouraging or supportive like they were. But just because you may not have been told how special you are from your family doesn’t mean you’re not – you might just have to work harder to believe it.
If no one has told you that, let me be the first.
You’re not a mistake.
You are so special!
One-of-a-kind.
Don’t be normal – because your differences are what make you unique!
Whatever obstacles you are facing, whatever struggle you have with not fitting in, whether you feel you aren’t pretty enough, strong enough, big enough, fast enough, or smart enough, know that you are wonderfully made.
When you start to embrace and even celebrate how special and different God made you, you can begin to do extraordinary things. When you accept your divine image, and see yourself as God sees you, the stress and anxiety of comparison will fade away. Be free to be who God says who are.
Go against the grain. You matter too much to God to be just like everyone else. Would you like to join the conversation, and receive weekly encouragement? Text me at (904) 441-5450
