One of the Greatest (and Hardest) Questions You Ask Yourself
I had a great friend say once, “It doesn’t matter if you live to be 1 or 100. What matters is what you did for Christ.”
The world defines success in many different ways. Maybe it’s accumulating stuff, gaining recognition for an accomplishment, graduating from college, or having ‘well-behaved’ kids.
I hope you reach your goals and succeed in what you’re doing. I truly do. But there’s something limiting about success as defined by the world. It’s often self-oriented. In other words, success is about “me.” It’s inward seeking – whether for affirmation, acceptance, greatness, intimacy, etc. And, ultimately, that kind of ‘me-focused’ success is not fulfilling.
In God’s economy, He gives us the opportunity to turn success into significance. Success in itself isn’t a bad thing. There’s never been a day in my life in which I’ve wanted to lose! But I also know that if I allow success to be used in only a self-fulfilling, self-serving way, I will lack true purpose. Significance, however, is about others - loving and serving people.
One of the greatest questions you can ask yourself is, Does my life change other people’s lives for the better?
Sit on that for a second. Does your life change other people’s lives for the better?
Years ago, I heard it said that one of the greatest tragedies in life is to look back one day and say, “I was successful in things that don’t matter.” That’s why I wrote Mission Possible - so that you, and I, live today with tomorrow in mind, and so that your end goal is not shaped by ‘self!’
When you’re focused on others—when your priorities are wrapped around the Great Commission, bringing the love of Jesus to hurting people—your life counts for more than a title people will forget or an achievement someone will probably surpass.
Living with significance is one of the hardest things to do because it doesn’t take much to veer off track. I battle with this daily. I’m running the race for God, and then all of a sudden one self-serving thought creeps into my head and then I’m running the race for myself. I’m not saying significance is easy…but what I’ve come to realize is that it’s worth it.
Every single one of us has a chance to make a difference. We have the opportunity, the ability, and the capacity to do something to build the kingdom of God. In Mission Possible, I write about how it’s not because we’re great or qualified or successful; it’s mission possible because we’ve teamed up with the God of this universe.
